Promoting Excellence in Brass Banding in Clackmannanshire, Scotland's Smallest County

Archive Area

Clackmannan District Brass Band was formed in October 1991 as a result of the amalgamation of the Alva Town and Alloa Burgh bands. Both bands were short of players and close to extinction until talks between their respective committees resulted in their merger.

Since 1991 the band has had a remarkable contesting success, representing Scotland at the National Championships on no fewer than 3 occasions.

A particularly successful contesting period culminated in the band being awarded the title “Scotland's Band of the Year 2002” and to celebrate this achievement, the band recorded their first ever CD.

After coming 3rd in the Scottish Championships in March the band continued their success at the Fife Brass Band Festival in April when they were awarded first place in Section 1 and Graham Caldwell, the solo horn player won the medal for the best instrumentalist

Success continued for the band when they lifted no fewer than 4 prizes at the Fife Open Contest in October. Playing London Overture by Philip Sparke the band were placed 2nd overall, were the best 1st section band and became the best Fife "A" Band removing the "Boiler" (see the photo above) from the Kingdom Brass Bandhall where it had resided for far too many years. Solo cornet player, Stuart Macaulay was also awarded the medal for the best cornet player at the contest.

And finally Clackmannan Band won the Scottish Shield Trophy by a massive 5 points in the Perth Concert Hall again playing London Overture in November.

Congratulations to all the band members who worked hard over the year to achieve these successes and of course to musical director, Paul Kiernan who rehearsed the band so ably.

The band also regularly perform locally in churches and at gala days as well as travelling each year to St Andrews to put on a concert in the bandstand
